New Website! and Draft Dummy: Little Arthur and the Big Moon

So after a big rethink and another draft of the whole book together this is the third draft of the collection. I now know what layout and sizing I like and I've reworked the compositions to fit these sizes. I'm still not fully set on text placement, I might experiment with being more playful with it. I'm looking forward to actually starting the illustrations rather than thinking I can, it has helped to have some time off from this to look at it again with fresh eyes and I'm very happy with the updates :) All comments welcome!

In other news I now have a website up and running! the domain name is bought but I haven't linked it yet .... If you would like to see what I've been up to head over to:

Layout: Little Arthur and the Big Moon

I have been working on this story for quite some time now and I thought I would share some of the steps that have been put into it. Writing this I have learnt a lot about what is 'appropriate' language and structure to be classed as a childrens book. I do find myself wanting to be more descriptive and express more details in the scene or action but when you have text with images and the audiences age range is so young the majority of the time it is unnecessary. This was a challenge as my first few drafts weren't 'child-friendly' in the sense the words were too long or too mature for young children, having said that it is still enjoyable and nowhere near finished so I best crack on with the illustrations!

After working out the story and following Brian Mcdonalds 'story-steps' I needed to work out the layout of the book. I have too many thumbnails to share to say the least but below is me trying to work out if there are any layouts that look too similar to each other in close proximity.

I dont think they are impressed...

Below are some some rough sketches I'm thinking of developing for the final spreads.

I'm still playing with layout, font, word placement etc but thought I'd share the story which you can read below.
NOTE: In my photoshop it keeps cropping the images/pdf after saving, if anyone knows why it would be a great help, thanks.

Freelancing Work January

Since the middle of January I have been working with an advertising studio called Schuiller & Heise.

You can find out more about who they are through their website:

For the past two weeks I have been working in-house part time on a 2D animation project. I'm not under NDA but I'm not sure how happy the client would be if too much information were revealed so I'll keep it short and sweet.

The studio is great and the landlord is eccentric enough to own pet goats so I get to say hello to them each morning too!

I hadn't used After Effects in such a long time let alone animated anything for even longer so admittedly I was a little concerned about under performing but they simply wanted a sweet, informative, no fuss animation and were very happy with the results.

The project is about the differences in fireplaces and whats more efficient and environmentally friendly etc.  It doesn't sound exciting but as I couldn't understand the voice over it just sounded like noise to me rather than sciencey facts, and it includes a cute dog so I was made up.

Below I'm sharing some stills of the first video:

The first video has been sent to the client today, so after we hear feedback we'll know if it is complete or not or if it meets the clients standards. Hopefully, it does and I can get cracking with the next video, all in all the client has asked for 8-9 videos depending on how much they need to say.

Overall, I really enjoyed doing this, it was mostly easy with a few challenges and I was able to do it quickly as all the assets were pre-made for me, and I can now say fireplace in German so all is well!

I'm not sure if this video is going only on the clients site or the studios but when it is up for viewing I will link it.

In other news I think I may be finished with the writing part of my story 'Little Arthur and the Big Moon' I'm sure I'll churn out another draft or two but I'm pretty happy with the story and I'm now diving into the paints to make some illustrations!
